If you’re an entrepreneur or business owner you’ve probably heard the terms mission and vision. Which is not to be confused with a mission statement or company values (also important). But here we’re going to cover why your vision is important and how to write your vision statement.
So, what is a vision for your business?
Your vision for your business is your goal for what your business will be in the future. It’s how you see your business in the future. Your vision will align with your business goals and aspirations. Your vision will be focused on your long term goals. So essentially your vision for your business is a way of communicating your business goals.
Now why is your vision important?
Having a compelling and clear vision for your business is important because it helps you and your team (or future team) understand the purpose and direction of the company. It provides inspiration and a roadmap that can be referenced when making decisions and setting goals. It also helps to inspire and motivate everyone involved in the business because they are all working toward the same thing.
Also, a strong vision can also help attract clients and customers because they too get behind what you are doing, share your values, and believe in your mission. Which is why we are sharing with you how to write your vision statement.
Do you need a vision for your business?
The short answer is yes. Every business owner or entrepreneur should have a vision for their business because it helps guide you when setting your goals. It’s your north star. The direction you follow. Even if you’re just starting out, determining what your vision is will help you stay the course with your overall picture when you have times you want to quit (because those times will come!).
Now let’s talk about how to write your vision statement:
- Define the direction of your business
- Where do you want your business to go in the future? What will you and your business look like five or ten years from now?
- What do you want to be known for? Do you want to have multiple storefronts? Do you want to expand your digital business to an in person option? Do you want to have multiple courses so you’re a one stop shop for your niche?
- Identify your goals
- Determine your big long term goals (at least five to ten years in the future)
- Make these specific to guide your business in the direction you want it to go
- What goals do you need to achieve to head in the direction you want your business to go?
- Determine your short term goals (the next five years)
- These are the steps to take to get to where you want to be in five years
- Determine your business values
- Essentially, what does your business prioritize?
- These are your guiding principles and beliefs that help you and your team (or future team) believe. Your business values a lot of times are related to business relationships, client or customer relationships, and company growth

- What are some of your business’ keywords? What are words that describe your business?
- Such as creative, innovative, fun, edgy, affordable, high-end, friendly, calm, minimal, chic, etc
- Look at everything you wrote down from the above and get started drafting. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Keep it short and broad – one to two sentences
- Align your vision with your business values and goals
- It should be inspiring and focused on success
- Write in uncluttered, concise, jargon-free language
- Step back and look at it to see if it aligns with your direction, goals, and values
